HOW THEY CAME ABOUT ?
Rossie Stone, (the founder of Dekko Comics Ltd), was a long-term struggler all throughout school, particularly with reading and absorbing information. Still to this day he says he finds it difficult to maintain his concentration even on a single sheet of text. These comics are based on a technique he coined for himself during Higher revision ~ and of which turned his grade upside down; (spoiler: he got an A!).
WHAT'S NEXT FOR DEKKO COMICS?
We want people to know about the comics and to spread the word. These comics have been praised by pupils, parents and teachers alike ~ quite unanimously. People have demanded more and we have plans to release Issue 4 by the end of 2017. At the moment we have three issues available each made up of 36 pages with 12 comic stories inside.
We were able to produce those because we were successful in our crowd funding campaign to raise money for a budget to make them. You can see the video from that campaign below, which gives you a clear and elaborate insight into what these comics are and what their purpose is and background is:
IS THERE EVIDENCE ?
Yes. A recent study at Sheffield Hallam University has shown that students remembered details significantly better when learnt through comic books compared to textbooks, with Dr Paul Aleixo (the lead researcher behind the study) stating, "The findings of our research has provided evidence to support the idea of using comic books to create instructional materials such as textbooks."
WHAT DO THEY INTEND TO DO ?
We personally believe there is nothing boring about
education, but there is in the way it is often presented and communicated. These comics mean to address that problem, and in doing so also provide something that visual learners, some people with dyslexia or autism, and those simply who are bored with homework will find easier and more natural.
HAVE THEY BEEN TESTED ?
Yes. They have been tested on 5 different Schools in Scotland, as well as individuals; (Torrance Primary, Blackfriars Primary, Hawick High School, The High School of Glasgow, and the HSOG Jr School). It has also been seen and approved by members of GDSS, as well as parents and teachers in and outside of these schools. The information is based on the current curriculum and has been validated by primary school teachers, and tutors of Glasgow University. As for the pupils we tested them on, (ranging from Primary 4 to S5), they have received very warm and enthusiastic responses. They showed quick and easy engagement with the material, found the content very digestible the more times they read it, and generally found the information clear to understand.
WHAT ARE DEKKO COMICS ?
Dekko Comics, (or 'Dekko'), are short comic stories of fun and often absurd characters. Through these stories, they also communicate educational information, making them an entertaining visual alternative to learning and revising in the conventional way of reading. The name comes from an old english slang word for 'to take a look' at something.
